Feds Request New Cultivators to Supply NIDA Researchers

NEW YORK, NY – A federal agency this month took steps to end a decades-long monopoly on cannabis grown for research, issuing a call for “qualified businesses” to supply marijuana for approved programs. The announcement was not a Request for Proposal, merely a “sources sought” request. The proposal from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) seeks capability statements “from all businesses having the in-house capability to act as a centralized source for acquisition and/or production of cannabis and related materials for research purposes .” The University of Mississippi holds the only federal license to grow cannabis. That 12-acre farm has held a non-competitive contract since 1968. “Interested organizations must demonstrate and document, in any capability statements submitted, extensive experience with and the ability to perform the above tasks.” These businesses and organizations “should demonstrate capability to administer and coordinate interrelated tasks in an effective

Curing Cannabis to Preserve Terpenes and Retail Prices

Image
One of the biggest issues with today’s cannabis is misplaced focus. While many consumers believe higher THC content makes for a better and more enjoyable flower, the key to success lies in properly preserved terpenes, and cannabis curing plays an essential role in delivering the goods. If done properly, dried and cured cannabis is more aromatic, flavorful, and capable of delivering the nuanced effects desired by the most discerning consumers. In fact, an unofficial examination of the most recent Emerald Cup winners showed that the judges overwhelmingly selected products with a higher terpene content according to Alec Dixon, co-founder and director of client relations at SC Labs , which regularly handles product testing for the event.  “If you look at the average cannabinoid content of the top 20 winners, it has nothing to do with the selection. But if you look at terpene content, you can always see it’s at least 1-2 standard deviations higher in the winners,” said Dixon. While man

CRTFD Barcelona Social Club Photo Gallery

Image
CRTFD recently opened its first cannabis social club in Barcelona, Spain. The space is located in the center of the city, a mere five-minute walk from the famous Cathedral of Barcelona, but CRTFD has not structured itself to blend into the surrounding tourist traps. Created by a team that prides itself on authenticity and embraces subculture at all turns, Club CRTFD is bringing the best in cannabis, fashion, and art with a California flavor to Europe. “We chose Barcelona as we feel it is the cannabis hub of Europe and the environment and energy resembles that of California,” said creative director Seti. Club CRTFD has a casual open layout, comfy furniture, and most notably stunning, custom art pieces throughout. Rather than trap their artwork in insignificant frames, they have opted to use their very walls to embrace vibrant, over-the-top pieces from movers and shakers in the art world. The venue will serve almost like a 21st commune with residency for creatives, featuring key indiv

Rapid Change and Psychedelics Took Center Stage at Lift&Co. Expo 2022

Image
LIFT&Co . landed at its usual spot for 2022 in the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, surrounded by the opulence of skyscrapers, high-end restaurants, and major banking institutions. A few years ago, this location felt at odds with an industry still shedding the stigma of prohibition. But now that legal cannabis has proven itself with an estimated $43.5-billion boost for Canada’s GDP while indirectly sustaining 151,000 jobs nationally, the event is exactly where it belongs. With a growing number of cultivators, expansion of retail outlets, and a strong trade show market in the U.S., it’s clear that tides have shifted a bit in the North American industry. That still didn’t stop a healthy list of exhibitors and speakers at this event, presenting an optimistic outlook for the future up north. One of the topical discussions that held the spotlight during the speaker sessions was the need to increase THC limits in Canadian edibles, which are currently capped at 10mg per packag
