The Evolution of Cannabis Branding and Retail

Image
While much of the conversation about innovation has been centered on new scientific studies and technology that maximize both product quality and variety, it’s likely the next crest of the green wave will be focused on branding and retail. After all, the industry needs sophisticated and convenient establishments to sell all these new, cutting-edge products. The demographics of the average cannabis consumer are changing rapidly, and to achieve sustainable success, dispensaries and brands need to be flexible in creating brands and retail experiences that exceed expectations . The future of the cannabis consumer environment poses a few interesting questions: How will retail stores adapt to a more educated and experienced consumer base once cannabis becomes ubiquitous and fully enters the mainstream? Will we see a cannabis brand emerge as an ultimate household name—the “Coca-Cola of cannabis,” if you will? First, let’s take a cue from the supermarket and grocery industry as we aim t

Scalable Machine Trimming that Mimics the Human Hand

Image
The cannabis industry is struggling through its lowest wholesale prices in years, and a series of recent Federal Reserve short-term borrowing rate hikes may add to the challenges. But despite the current conditions, New Frontier Data expects cannabis sales in the United States to grow by more than $10 billion between 2022 and 2025 and global cannabis sales to reach nearly $51 billion by 2023. Businesses that survive this cycle of market volatility will rely on the quality, efficiency, and ingenuity of their operational processes to keep costs low enough to generate revenue. Equipment with unique and scalable technology, like the Mobius M108S Trimmer , has the potential to keep production running efficiently during lean times while presenting opportunities for a competitive spot in the brighter days to come. Mobius 108S Trimmer (Photo: Mobius) In Colorado, wholesale prices have hit the lowest point in almost a decade, falling from $1,876 per pound in 2014 to $658 per pound in

The Environmental Impact of Sustainable Packaging

Image
Here is the ugly truth: Despite increasing consumer demand for sustainable packaging containing quality products, the cannabis industry produces billions of units of single-use packaging every year. The industry must develop a circular packaging model that reduces the impact of single-use packaging. For decision-makers at cannabis brands, sourcing sustainable packaging requires an objective assessment of a material’s impact throughout the value chain. An accurate examination of packaging’s environmental footprint begins with evaluating both the upstream and downstream environmental impacts of packaging materials at the local, regional, and global levels. These ecological impacts must be evaluated equally while sourcing from sustainable packaging companies, and such an assessment inherently will prompt a discussion about the trade-offs between different packaging materials. Upstream impacts In my pursuit of truly eco-conscious products, I have found materials with significant upstr

A Pandemic Boomerang Hits Legacy Cannabis Markets

Ever since adult legalization took hold across the United States, retail trends and consumer buying habits in the cannabis industry have been something of an enigma and a moving target. When the coronavirus pandemic hit in 2020, operators buckled up for a rollercoaster ride that ended up being a boon, validating companies as “essential services,” boosting revenues, and accelerating market growth. As the pandemic waned, however, it became apparent COVID-19 created market anomalies. Companies are still trying to sort those out as consumers return to pre-pandemic buying habits. Industry analysts at Headset recently provided some data, perspective, and insight into the new normal for cannabis markets out west.  “From March 2020 to March 2021, legacy cannabis markets saw drastic increases in growth,” according to the analysts. “In the beginning months of the pandemic, for example, Colorado’s total adult-use sales grew by 63 percent from February to July 2020.
