Lift-ing the American Trade Show Experience

Image
When Lift Cannabis Business Conference & Expo was introduced in Canada in 2016, the gathering was far more than just a meeting place for burgeoning cannabis businesses to discuss new ventures. At the time, ending prohibition was merely an idea. Lift quickly became a crucial event offering a safe space for industry stakeholders to discuss how to move forward together. As such, the event played a pivotal role in legalization north of the border. In the years since, Lift has grown with the industry. Despite a pandemic and a sea of other cannabis-related trade shows that have come and gone, Lift continues to evolve and act as a booster and barometer for the industry. This year, for the first time, Lift will expand its experience-based Canadian conference and trade show to the United States with an American-market-oriented event scheduled to take place in San Francisco in August. It’s one thing to simply move into the U.S. in hopes of gaining market share, but it’s another to cultiv

Study Reveals Chemical Differences in Indoor and Sungrown Cannabis

When it comes to cannabis, most people assume the plant’s genetics are primarily responsible for an individual cultivar’s cannabinoid and terpene content. However, it turns out that cultivation practices may also play a significant role. A recent study published in the journal Molecules reveals how the growing process can impact the cannabis plant. A team from Colombia University, in conjunction with farmers in the famed Emerald Triangle, compared two genetically-identical strains—Red Velvet and Cheetah Piss—grown indoors and outdoors. The clones were from the same mother plants with the outdoor samples, “grown in raised beds using a proprietary mixture of all-natural soil and composts under full sunlight.” The indoor samples were grown under artificial light in a proprietary growth medium. Once the plants reached maturity, the team noticed immediate differences in the look and scent of the samples. As the report states, “the outdoor samples were stickier to the touch and were m

Analysis of NY Adult-Use Cannabis Regulations — Is the Market Doomed to Fail?

NEW YORK — Acreage Holdings, Inc. (“Acreage” or the “Company”) (CSE: ACRG.A.U, ACRG.B.U), (OTC: ACRHF, ACRDF), a New-York based vertically integrated, multi-state operator of cannabis cultivation and retailing facilities in the U.S., released a New York Illicit Cannabis Market Absorption Analysis that (i) examines the state’s current trajectory for achieving key goals outlined in the Marijuana Regulation and Taxation Act (“MRTA”) and the need to course correct to do so; (ii) identifies the potential implications of its current adult-use draft regulations; and (iii) ultimately demonstrates the importance of expanded access to more operators, including Registered Organizations (“ROs”), to the success and stabilization of New York’s legal cannabis market. New York cannabis market is projected to be worth $5 – $7 billion, yet limited access to the regulated market is stifling growth and delaying the absorption of the illicit market. Acreage commissioned MPG Consulting, a leading strategi

Emerald Conference Highlights Desire for Better Scientific Data

Image
The eighth-annual Emerald Conference , an interdisciplinary cannabis science event, was an intellectual celebration of the cannabis plant for the inquisitive, data-hungry minds of the industry. Hosted over three days on the tranquil shores of Coronado in San Diego, this year’s Emerald Conference played host to hundreds of attendees, more than fifteen speakers, and approximately fifty exhibitors and sponsors with booths and technical poster presentations. Overall, the industry event succeeded in sparking meaningful conversations about the significant role data and science are playing in the evolution of the industry. “The Emerald Conference is important because it provides a platform for scientific communication and collaboration,” said David Dawson, Ph.D., chief scientific officer at Via Innovation . “Open scientific dialogue is important for all fields, but especially an emerging field such as cannabis science. To overcome the black market paranoia and misinformation that has run ra

The Cannabis-Tobacco Worm Turns

WASHINGTON – More Americans now support cannabis legalization than tobacco legality, according to two recent polls. That’s quite a turnaround for both tobacco, which used to be legal everywhere, and cannabis, which was legal nowhere until relatively recently. In a research brief it released in February, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention revealed 57.3 percent of American adults support prohibiting the sale of all tobacco products. The percentages varied little among demographic groups, with the exception of gender: 52.2 percent of male respondents supported banning tobacco products, while 62.2 percent of women supported a ban. No difference in support existed between annual household income groups. In addition, “Although support … was lower among people who reported current tobacco product use compared with those who did not, … more than one-quarter of [tobacco users] supported prohibiting all tobacco product sales,” the report noted. A report from the Pew Research Ce

7 Best Practices for Audit Preparation in the Cannabis Industry

Image
It’s the time of the year when businesses of every industry prepare for tax season. For the cannabis industry, seasoned plant-touching business owners and recent licensees alike will be required to meet stringent requirements where taxes are concerned. In fact, the cannabis industry faces unique challenges not applicable to other industries—namely Internal Revenue Service Code 280E (IRC 280E), a tax code that imposes restrictions on the deductions cannabis businesses can take . IRC 280E restricts companies that sell Schedule I or Schedule II substances from deducting ordinary business expenses other than the cost of goods sold (COGS) . This means plant-touching businesses can allocate some of their operating expenses, like rent and utilities, into COGs as allowed in IRC 471. Understanding this code and organizing your accounting to comply is crucial, because the IRS has been auditing cannabis businesses actively to ensure they comply with IRC 280E. Not doing so could make your business

The Medical Community Must Embrace Education

Image
Amid the move toward cannabis legalization in the United States is a major shift in access and use. Approximately three-quarters of Americans now live in states where medical cannabis is legal (including CBD-focused programs like the one in Texas), and nearly half live in states where anyone over the age of twenty-one can access legal cannabis. Around 50 million Americans currently consume cannabis in some manner. Yet, few healthcare professionals are informed about modern products or how consumers can use them responsibly and effectively for their health. The onus is on the medical community to match consumer use with education and research. With such a large percentage of the population using cannabis, primary care providers and other clinicians have a pragmatic duty to reduce harm. Healthcare professionals should pursue cannabinoid research and work with patients directly to provide a level of educated support that matches the medical establishment’s knowledge of other widely co
