Planet 13 OC Dispensary

Only a handful of cannabis retailers in the entire country enjoy what could be considered national recognition. The select few have achieved their status through a mixture of aggressive franchising (Cookies), major marketing spend (MedMen, Eaze) or, in the case of Planet 13, by creating something so over-the-top it becomes a social media phenomenon.

So when the parent company announced in early 2021 its second store would be in Santa Ana, in Orange County, California, the question winding through observers’ minds was “Will the same blockbuster, tourist-friendly retail concept work in a place with a fixed local audience?”

Brands of the Rich and Famous

Image
While cannabis may still have some distance to go before it’s truly normalized, the plant and related products are no longer exactly taboo. This shift is apparent in increasingly blatant pop-culture references, expanding legalization efforts, and the new, unabashed ways products are marketed to the masses—most notably by celebrities. A race to dominate the market in the same way Nike owns athletic shoes and Coca-Cola eclipses all other soft drinks has contributed to product saturation and fierce competition in the cannabis space. Much as Nike and Coke did decades ago, cannabis brands increasingly seek celebrity involvement to bolster their image and create emotional links with consumers. No matter the industry or product, a celebrity’s endorsement—or better yet, ownership stake—can precipitate earned media and consumer interest in the short term. Played right, the hype can become brand awareness that sticks around for the long haul. Cannabis is becoming a lifestyle product that ties...

6 Practical Ways Companies Are Redefining Efficiency

The iconic Scottish-American industrialist and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie built his considerable fortune and status as a manufacturing titan on the back of his insatiable pursuit of cost reduction through efficiency. After making a small fortune in the burgeoning rail industry, the young Carnegie was ready for his next opportunity. He had become privy to a revolutionary steel-making technique called the Bessemer process, which used molten pig iron to generate significantly higher output with a fraction of the labor. Carnegie built the first Bessemer plant in the United States in 1875 and subsequently went on a mergers-and-acquisitions spree, buying up inefficient steel manufacturers and converting them to Bessemer plants. Over a fifteen-year period, Carnegie reduced the cost of steel from $100 to $18 per ton and built the lions’s share of what would become the world’s first billion-dollar company: U.S. Steel. The introduction of the Bessemer process to the United States ushered i...

How to Acquire New Customers and Keep the Ones You Have

The time, energy, and money spent to acquire customers come at a premium cost. So why let them slip through your fingers? While producing a stellar product or service is an important part of the customer-retention recipe, successful strategies must be much broader. “Consumer retention is universal,” according to Flowhub Chief Executive Officer Kyle Sherman. “It’s about creating a positive experience and an incentive to come back — from atmosphere to having the right technology in place to training staff on standard operating procedures and every product detail. Look at the Apple store, Ritz Carlton, and your favorite local dispensary. These companies provide standout experiences but operate in completely different industries. Each company makes its customers feel like royalty.” Sherman has watched brands and retailers acquire, lose, reacquire, retain, and otherwise dance with consumers since early in the second decade of the twenty-first century. While working for industry powerhous...
